PALLIATIVE
CARE Palliative
Care, ‘Santhwana Paricharanam’
(in Malayalam) is an attempt to provide a quality life to the patients
suffering from long term, bed-ridden and terminal diseases like Cancer, AIDS,
Paraplegia, Quadriplegia, Muscular Dystrophy, Thalassemia,
Cerebral Palsy etc., and also for perennial accident victims. This endeavor
is to discharge the social responsibility of conveying our concern, love and
care towards our fellow human beings who are in need of some kind of solace
or a helping hand to cope up with their progressing terminal diseases. The
care is being rendered by multidisciplinary teams consisting of volunteers,
doctors and nurses, who visit the homes of patients regularly and provide
psycho social, emotional and medicinal support. The Palliative Care include not only end of
life care but systematic counseling and support to the patients and their
families from the moment the terminal disease is diagnosed. Harmonizing the relationships of the
patients and their family members, who are the main care givers, is also an
integral part of Palliative discipline. |
By
drawing inspiration from the feature on Palliative Care movements of Kerala
published in Malayala Manorama Newspaper during the year 2008, DNipCare (Delhites’ National
Initiative in Palliative Care), an organization for
Palliative Care was born in Initially
a dedicated team of 45 volunteers joined together under DNipCare
and have been trained in Palliative Care in Delhi by the Indian Association
of Palliative Care, Calicut, Kerala in November
2008. Further volunteers added up and
presently we are rendering regular and consistent support to the patients
throughout DNipCare
has provided Palliative Care to more than 55 patients with an average 3 home
visit per month per patient within its two years of existence. Five deserving
poor patients and their families are being given the monthly food ration by DNipCare regularly in addition to the medicines and
social support extended to them. |
Providing
waterbeds to the prolonged bedridden patients suffering from bedsores,
financial and logistical support to the poor patients to get their treatments
and diagnostic tests done, counseling the deeply depressed terminally ill
patients thereby assisting them to bring in a ray of hope in their minds to
lead a quality life devoid of physical pain and socio psychological
sufferings, are some of the activities we are actively involved with. Providing
guidance and Assistance for rehabilitation of poor patients or their families
for earning a decent livelihood is also a program taken up by DNipCare and the patients are able to move forward in
their life with dignity. Setting up of
a screen printing unit at the residence of a paraplegic bedridden patient
with urinary catheter, diabetics and bedsores is a latest attempt of DNipCare on the above lines of rehabilitation package. The
cases handled by DNipCare are extensively discussed
by volunteers in the Monthly Review Meetings held on Second Saturdays of
every month in Kerala Club, Reviews
of the cases are done by experts from Medical and Palliative fields and
discussions held to address the issues patients are facing with. Sensitization of the masses to think
positively for mitigating the sufferings of the hapless and ailing patients
around us is the priority area DNipCare holds close
to the heart. |
Doctors
and experts on Palliative Care field from various hospitals and other
renowned institutions attend these review meetings and provide valuable
guidance to the volunteers. Though
the beginning of this initiative was within the precincts of specific culture
of Malayalees under Kerala Muslim Welfare
Association, Delhi, the potential of the mission has leapt beyond its
boundaries and thus now evolved a cosmopolitan and multilingual approach with
the participation of more kind hearted and committed volunteers hailing from
across the States in India. Both the patients and volunteers hail from various
States of Our
organization believes in spreading awareness among masses thereby ensuring
maximum coverage of patients to get relief from the psycho social and medical
problems suffered by them. In
order to achieve this, we conduct sensitization programs in and around Funds
for providing medical and social support are being generated so far by the
volunteers by pooling in from own pockets and through small donations from
well wishers. Activities and day-today
accounting thereon including fund flow are available for public to review and
